Solo line-up: Billy Bragg Notes: THE RIDE OF YOUR AMAZING LIFE VOL. 19 Now we're coming to the point where there's unfinished busy-ness on top of inflows and outflows of a wealth of material, while we run into NAB and other questionable forks in the road, and the blurring of TGPC and the Stonecutter Archives along with one's own. After hitting the Vol. 150 mark of TGPC, it's time to rummage through the old storage and get some unshared older and newer transfers out there in a parallel race to the finish line, so we can accelerate this and move on to the elegymart archives before that turns to dust. The previous shares of the Stonecutter Archives weren't named or numbered, because there was no foresight that the bot would one day disappear into thin air. Thankfully we now have that database salvaged, but since the numbered series functioned so well to keep track of TGPC, we're applying the same approach here. So here's the next major drop courtesy of the Stonecutter Archives. There was a thought about calling it Ticket to Ride, but that seemed to connote some exchange of currency, while Free Ride would mistakenly lead others to believe this series focuses on Foghat or Edgar Winter uploads (apologies to those of you who just had your hopes squashed there). For the rest of you, buckle yourself in, because you want to do this safely -- let's see if you can all handle having TGPC and the R.O.Y.A.L. series running neck-in-neck. That's if we don't crash over here first. For now we won't divulge who has the inner or outer track, but brace yourself for the ride. This volume brings us to another "Modern Rock Live" call-in show, featuring Billy Bragg. Carter USM were on the second half of the show, but Stonecutter did not record that. This cassette was labeled as July 12th, but we're going with the 13th as all the "Modern Rock Live" shows took place on Monday nights (from 11:00PM Eastern / 8:00PM Pacific), until 1994 when it switched to Tuesday nights. They didn't do the show on Sunday nights until 1995 when it was expanded to a 90-minute length. Billy was in town for the tribute concert to Woody Guthrie as part of SummerStage at Central Park which took place on Sunday at 2:00PM. He could have finished up his set in the Park, chowed down dinner and then rushed out to Long Island for this program in a meticulously coordinated schedule, but he more than likely did this on a Monday night. This is all dialogue, save the few edited seconds of the official track "Sulk." Topics discussed: wouldn't you know it, about 95% politics. What else would you expect when you have Billy Bragg as a guest and an election year from 28 years ago: Clinton/Gore on the Democratic ticket, Bush/Quayle on the Republican one, and Perot/Stockdale from the Independent Party. Have things changed or have they remained the same? Never mind, don't answer that. Funny to hear Bernie Sanders get a mention here from Billy. Host Tom Calderone is the more fired up of the two, whereas Billy is comparably civil and controlled. Not that you could blame Tom -- he is the American here after all. Billy jokes about running for office with Calderone as his running mate. The closest Tom got was being promoted to President of VH-1 in 2008, not a bad substitute. There's some fuzziness in the FM reception here and there, but all still very listenable. Kris, Chris, Stacey -- if we've spelled your name wrong here, please let us know; otherwise our apologies.
