"40" [8:36] Total Running Time: [1:19:15] Taper: Kirit Kapadia Equipment: Sony WM-D6 Corrected version (first version had incorrectly split final two tracks, omitting Gloria) So, good news everyone...Taper anonymous has decided to kindly share more from his extensive uncirculated master archive as someone from the collecting community has surfaced with a few of his requests. This time around, we go back in time 40 years to the Unforgettable Fire tour...evidently Kirit Kapadia was a prodigious taper. I do not know all of the details, and sadly he is no longer "among us", but evidently he was not someone who loved sharing his recordings far and wide...and when he passed, quite a number of his masters were discarded...but fortunately a "friend of a friend" pathway led to at least some of his recordings being salvaged. I would consider this particular show to be a B/B+ recording...a tad distant, no trouble hearing the crowd or people singing nearby, but still very "listenable". I am among many who completely fail to understand why people thought it appropriate to scream during these concerts. I am not an expert as to the state of the art equipment used in that era, but I am guessing tape flips might account for the 3 second cut in "Bad" at 6:45, and either another tape flip or an attempt to save space on the tape accounting for the elimination of some crowd reaction at the end of "Gloria". I like to see what other versions of these shows have made the rounds in the past...according to my notes (not necessarily 100% accurate), these two have been shared at torrent sites: U2 – Civic Auditorium -- San Francisco, California – December 15, 1984 (JP master) U2 – Civic Auditorium -- San Francisco, California – December 15, 1984 (CM-30 upgrade) achtungbootlegs.com also references the JP show: Taper : JP in association with JEMS Material : Aiwa CM-30 > Sony WM-D3 > Master Cassette > Nak BX-300 > Adobe Audition (JP remaster) > CD-R www.u2gigs.com has attributed the name "Welcome from Dublin City , Ireland" to the JP show. There is cover art for a version entitled "A Second to Say Goodbye" with no taper information, though Jason Cook references it as follows: "This is a nice audience recording of the last concerts on the first North American leg of The Unforgettable Fire tour. Sound quality is good while audience noise is present but not overbearing. There is no background noise whatsoever. A fairly persistent rumbling can be heard during the first few tracks -- possibly created by the person holding the recorder moving into position." www.u2gigs.com also shows a cover art version which claims to be an Island Records version "U2 1984-12-15 San Francisco, USA" but no doubt is faked cover art.
