I didn't think much of the tapes, other than that it was something new to add to my growing tape collection. They arrived on the 26th, and I would post images of the tapes in a group I'm in. A good friend named Walrus offered to transfer the tapes I had, so I sent off the two Boston tapes, alongside a Las Vegas 87 tape I had recently acquired. Some weeks would pass until I took up the offer to get them transferred; I would send the tapes off to him on the 21st of July, and they would arrive shortly thereafter on the 26th. A day passed, and Walrus would update me on the status of the tapes. The Las Vegas 87 tape was a dub from LP to tape, but the Boston tapes, as he told me, may be from a new recorder. I was ecstatic to hear the news, and he would share some samples of the tape. He then abandoned the original plan for him to transfer it, and send it off to JEMS to get it transferred proper. It would be a while before anything new happened, as JEMS was on vacation (I hope you enjoyed it!), so for the time being, Walrus made a preliminary transfer of the tape. What I would hear was amazing: a new source for the great St. Patrick's Day show in 1992. While it wasn't as clear and bright as the Madelf master, it was closer and punchy, not being as distant as the common source. It would be sometime before the day came for the transfer by JEMS himself. His transfer is far superior to the preliminary one done by Walrus (not being rude), and he gave it the magic JEMS is well known for. Then came the time for the tape to go out into the world of live U2. Being a fan of the band for almost 8 years now, it feels good to contribute something to the live scene of U2, something I appreciate and am thankful for. An impulsive buy on eBay became a great discovery. Concerning the history and lineage of the tape, I asked the seller about this prior to shipping it out. The seller told me that they got it at a yard sale, and they do not remember where; they did not mention how long ago, so that is unknown too. I don't know if this is a low gen or high gen tape either, and the identity of the taper is also unknown. Despite this, I am glad to see the taper's experience be shared with everyone, perhaps for the first time in decades. Maybe with the release of this tape, they might come out of the woodworks and share their story, maybe even a master. I want to thank Walrus, minnman83 (seller), JEMS, and the taper for everything.
