I wanted a totally audience source, just for the sake of consistency, even though many songs from this show appeared in various places in pro-shot audio or video. The VHS audio was very good, the only drawback being that there is some rolling static and tiny dropouts at several places throughout the show. Otherwise the taper had a good location and the instruments and vocals actually come through very clear throughout the show. As for the cassette source, it’s not very good, but it is probably the only audience source for those 2 songs (“Love is Blindness” is one of several songs available elsewhere from this show that was professionally recorded). I cross faded at the end of “With or Without You” to the cassette source, slowed that source down to play at the right speed, and fought the temptation to do anything else to either source. So this should be the best sounding/most complete recording of this show (and it’s pretty good for a video) and a nice complement to the DAT source of the previous night here, but people can judge for themselves. Besides that, this is one of my favorite shows of this leg, and is for some reason just one of the most intimate and representative shows of the Outside Broadcast tour, one of the finest moments in U2’s touring history. “Tryin’” featured an improvised line in the middle about New York. Like the previous night, they did a great acoustic version of “New York, New York.” They did “Satellite of Love” for the first time with the Lou Reed video. Finally, there were also great and somewhat improvised versions of “Bad” and “With or Without You.” If I had to pick a few top shows from the entire ZOO TV tour, this would be up there.
