12.01.2012 Mali, Timbuktu Bono at the Festival Au Desert NTSC AUD-SHOT no menu, one chapter Bono jumped onstage with the famous Touareg band Tinariwen at the Festival Au Desert in the North of Mali near Timbuktu (2 hours) especifically Essakane Put in an appearance on the opening night on Thursday in what organisers said was a show of support for the event. It is organized by AITMA and EFES Associations together with Essakane Production. This festival seeks its origin in the big traditional Touareg festivities. The festival was held under extra security measurements after armed gangs kidnapped tourists in the region. Bono was at the festival with 20 people of his One Foundation, he sat in the VIP section between the Minister of Culture and Minister of Tourism and Arts. The UK’s Telegraph captured footage of Bono onstage with seminal Touareg group, and festival staple, Tinariwen and Bassekou Kouyate. Their report highlighted the fact that “al Qaeda threats have kept crowds away” from attending the Timbuktu festival. Bono's improvised "Vive le Mali, Vive la paix, Vive la musique," did not have as much force for them as when Tinariwen sang "Imidiwan" or "Tenere.
