They often are more “unscripted” at this point and are willing to try different things before they settle into the tour. I preferred the “Beat on the Brat” intro to the “People Have the Power” intro, but the Punk Rock Intermission didn’t work as well as the Wanderer in my opinion (I never got to see the “Fly” intermission). We got a few rarely played songs, like California, When Love Comes To Town, and Miracle Drug, all of which were great. They dropped Still Haven’t Found and The Troubles from the night before, but all in all a great show. Project Notes by Chrisedge: A project years in the making! While I have done a few different two camera edits, I have never attempted a 7 camera edit before on this scale. I had shot the entire show from a terrific vantage point, having both "sitters" in front of me, and a rail to steady the camera on. My friend Zen2990 had shot 8 songs, with the exact same camera as me, (focusing mainly on the eStage songs) and I had his footage shortly after the show. As usual, several folks wanted to work on a Vancouver multicam, but had not shot anything and I didn't want to go that route. I contacted a few folks after the show, and had a hard time getting "real" footage from anyone, but slowly but surely, the original camera angles started to arrive in my inbox. However, no one had filmed the entire show. Rosa shared her floor footage early on. She captured 14 songs, including the first 10 in a row. A song like Vertigo shows, that you can do a lot with just two well-placed cameras! Rosa captured the most besides me. Next up both Stefan and Reddef got 11 songs each. Stefan is with U2gigs who I credit for getting me back into shooting video in 2009! And Reddef was one of the few people who responded from a YouTube inquiry. Reddef shot the show with a new 4K camera and captured clips in both 4K and 1080p. The quality of his angle (from behind the stage on Adams side) is quite apparent even in the 1080p files. And Stefan, having shot for U2gigs, knows how to film, and his footage looked terrific. Next up in number of songs is Nuno! Nuno got 9 songs and provided a nice close-up angle to the stage, along with amazing shots of Bono on the eStage that I leaned on heavily. Again, someone that has experience filming and knows how to shoot! As I mentioned my friend Zen, got 8 songs right near the tip of the eStage. Not the most amazing angle for the screen songs, but great footage for the band when they were close to him. Last but not least was Frank from U2Gigs getting 6 songs filmed. He was right next to Stefan but they know how to tag-team. Often when Frank was zoomed in, Stefan would be wide and visa-versa. They are a team to be reckoned with! I want to thank all of them for taking the time to break out their original files and upload and send! I did not want to use ANY YouTube sourced footage for the project and even when I was left with two songs that are only my angle, I still stuck by that rule. One YouTuber had good footage of Beautiful Day and replied that he wanted to be part of the project, but never responded to getting me the files. There are two songs that are only my angle, Beautiful Day and Pride (In the Name of Love). A fun fact, the only song that all 7 of us filmed with When Love Comes to Town! There are also 4 parts with zero footage, none more than 10 seconds or so. No music is missed and I filled in the video in with some slo-mo footage so it’s not black/blank. While I have never edited a project like this, the hardest part was my own will to get it done. I had sync’ed it up to my audio (Which had some issues) as well as a “scratch mix” Sharebear sent me sometime in fall of 2015. I knew he wasn’t going to let me use it, but I figured if nothing else, I would make a version for me, with his scratch mix audio. But as the angles trickled in and I was attempting to find missing songs, etc…I had slowed down and stopped working on it. I still was missing 3 songs and then when Reddef got me Bullet (along with his other songs), I got back to it. Sharebear challenged me with a deadline to get it finished and he would let me use his mix if I stuck to the deadline! Not only that, he was crazy enough to share his files with several of his mixing friend that were all up for a mix-off challenge. Part of my desires was to include my own audience recording, which had suffered from a few dropouts (Tascam didn’t like my SD card) and upon hearing my recording, he offered to fix and master it. I will let him (and each of the mixers) explain more about their methods in his audio comments, but I appreciate his tenacity and him helping me out on my audio. MAJOR MAJOR THANK YOU TO CONTENT PROVIDERS: The late Jared "Tapeboy" Houser, Sharebear, DJ Soulless, Dutch Baker, Flynn, Frank, Julien, nunomoreira1, Reddef, Rosa, Stefan, steve7711, Univonc, Zen2990 & Zummo. Special thanks to Tapeboy, butterking, _Macphisto_, U2Gigs, all my U2 friends, and lastly Sharebear for finally making me commit to a deadline! Thanks - Chrisedge Audio Project Notes by Sharebear: Vancouver 2 was a surprisingly good show, especially for the second night of the tour. Not long after the show, Chrisedge started bugging me to bang out a mix of the show. I was busy with trying to make the perfect formula and mix for some later shows in the tour, and took a while to come back around. After a while, I started making "scratch mixes", which created a mix of about 80% of the sound quality level I like but significantly less work. So Chrisedge was happy with the scratch mix (for the moment). Yet then, he stalled out on the video! I think he got discouraged because I was not generally in favor of sharing the audio mix to the general population. After much friendly banter back and forth, I agreed. Since Chrisedge was taking his sweet time on the video edit, I decided to have some fun by inviting a bunch of fellow tapers and mixers to take a turn at the audio. I provided the raw recordings to everybody, although I did cheat a bit by providing a time aligned audience recording of DJ Soulless. The original plan was a completely hands-off project, but I couldn't resist in giving some feedback and then a fair amount of technical assistance on phase and latency offsets. Everybody managed to make the time frame of two months and finalized their mix. We have three audience recordings and nine matrix recordings. All nine matrix recordings use my Wireless recordings and DJ Soulless' audience. A total of five wireless feeds were recorded (sixth glitches due to cable issue). Pretty clean as far as reception. Bono's vocal has an issue resulting in about 6db of headroom being clipped off. Also some static on bono vocals during short part of Pride and Beautiful Day. Other than those, pretty clean. Always fun when a team effort comes together. Audio Source Notes: Audio #1 - Nakamichi 700 mics > Olympus LS-7 (24/96 capture) Recorded by The late Jared "Tapeboy" Houser (1956-2016) Remastered by Sharebear Remaster Notes: The last U2 show Tapeboy would ever see. Jared was a true legend in this hobby and all-around fantastic guy, and we are all saddened by his passing. We decided to highlight his recording on this project, so it'll have a lossless stream remastered from the raw 24/96 files. For the remaster, there was some mild bass distortion to be addressed, declapping, and a general spit and polish. Audio #2 - Sound Professional SP-CMC-10/AT933 Hyper Cardioids > Tascam DR2D (24/48k) Recorded by Chrisedge Remastered by Sharebear Remaster Notes: Probably the best audience recording sonically of the bunch. There were a few glitches with packets getting corrupted, so a bit of polish there and you likely won't notice. Remaster was generally unobtrusive with clean-up on the bass, declapping, and bit of balance on the EQ. Audio #3 - CA-11 Omni > CA 9100 Preamp > Tascam DR2D (24/44.1k) Recorded by DJ Soulless Remastered by Sharebear Remaster Notes: Not the greatest audience recording, but had a nice capture of the room sound and general crowd noise. As such, made for a good audience in mixing. Remaster was a bit more intrusive than the other too, with a bit more heavy-handed EQ and spatial adjustment. I also did some surgical cleanup on crowd noise for this audience. Audio #4 - Wireless Receivers > Multitrack Recorder & Church Audio CA-11s Mixed by Sharebear - "Dry Mix" Mix Notes: My goal in the dry mix is a well-balanced soundboard recording. There's very little crowd noise, very minimal compression, and generally sounds dry. I've done some tricks to remove ~90% of the metronome and counts, although a few remnants still exist. General static repair cleanup, vocal clipping repair, and the usual Sharebear bag of mixing tricks. I do believe my mix is the only one without the “Disco” mix of Sunday Bloody Sunday. Audio #5 - Wireless Receivers > Multitrack Recorder & Church Audio CA-11s Mixed by Sharebear - "Wet Mix" Mix Notes: Similar mix as the "Dry Mix", but more compression and significantly more audience. Goal was more of a radio broadcast sound, although I still can't in good faith crank the compression and saturated audience like most radio broadcasts. Audio #6 - Wireless Receivers > Multitrack Recorder & Church Audio CA-11s Mixed by Sharebear - "Goldilocks Mix" Mix Notes: And then we have the "Goldilocks Mix", which is basically a mix at the halfway point between the Wet and Dry mix. Adjust to your own flavor. Audio #7 - Wireless Receivers > Multitrack Recorder & (Church Audio CA-11s) Mixed by the Dutch Baker Mix Notes: I wanted to have a final mix which didn’t contain any clicks and/or counts... they kinda annoy me during listening. I'd had been experimenting with some filters in my first mix and got some other clue's along the way to get rid of them (Thx S!;-) It's still there in some songs but dramatically reduced in songs where it took the forefront. As for the counts, due to the timeframe, some of them are still sounding a bit sloppy... so next time I will have to do better. I like a recording which has as good amount of low-end in it. It's kinda tricky though if you're working on it. In my first mix I was really struggling... the interaction between the bass & drumkick is hard to tame without effecting one or the other. In the end I think I made a solid match between both of them. Bono's vocals contained some high-end distortion and some static. The static were pretty severe and I tried to get rid of it as best as I could. Only Pride and Beautiful Day were marred with it, you probably can still hear it. The high-end distortion was caused by the limitations of the recorder (less headroom), but those I was able to repair. The result however was that the levels started to fluctuate more, which in the end resulted in some variable volume. Something to repair in the aftermath. Thanks to all involved and giving me the opportunity to mix this show! Audio #8 - Wireless Receivers > Multitrack Recorder & Church Audio CA-11s Mixed by Flynn Mix Notes: It was an honor and a thrill to be asked to join this "mix off" by ShareBear. My previous experience with IEM mixing has been exclusively with Bruce Springsteen shows, and I was a little intimidated about mixing a band whose music I didn't know like the back of my hand. I consider myself slightly more than a casual fan, but not much, so not knowing all the guitar, keyboard, and drum parts was concerning to me. But part of the fun of mixing IEMs is hearing all the little parts that aren't always noticeable when listening to the full band and that held true for this project as well. I will definitely be listening to more U2 in the near future and I'm more excited about them this summer in the Swamps of Jersey. Audio #9 - Wireless Receivers > Multitrack Recorder & Church Audio CA-11s Mixed by Julien Mix Notes: In between the crashes I suffered with Audition I still managed to get rid of most of the click track and the countdowns but then you are used to iem recordings. I do like when there is a powerful bass in a recording so if you do too you'll like that mix and if you don't then screw you :) Audio #10 - Wireless Receivers > Multitrack Recorder & Church Audio CA-11s Mixed by Zummo Mix Notes: When approaching a mix, I always start with how is it going to be heard. In 2001 when I mixed I always listened back on a massive stereo with huge speakers off a cd and wanted the sound to replicate what I heard at the tip of the heart. Nowadays it’s more people starting at a 2 inch screen on an iPhone, listening through some sort of earbud through an mp3. That said I use a great deal more compression than I used to, basically used none in 2001 to using it in part of the individual tracks then applying it to the final mix again in the end nowadays. Times have changed; we have more feeds now, which allow us to replicate a more pure board experience. That said the greatest challenge I find in these mixes is dealing with Bono’s vocals, in that it is very dynamic and gets very loud and soft, as well as very harsh at times to go along with its dryness. I spend a fair amount of time compressing it to limit the high and lows and taking some of the harshness out of it while adding some reverb to get some depth to it. The rest of the tracks pretty much fell into place, feeling like I have a pretty good balance between the three instruments. Audio #11 - Wireless Receivers > Multitrack Recorder & Church Audio CA-11s Mixed by Steve7711 Mix Notes: I decided to only use the audience recording, Edge, Adam, and Bono. I used the parametric eq in audition 3.0 for all my eq stuff. Let's start with the easy stuff...no eq on the Edge feed or the audience recording, and I fixed the phase on Bonos and Adams feeds. Then I did some mixing on Adam's feed dropping a lot of the high end to try and squelch the click track as much as I could and fatten up the bass. That worked nicely. Then comes the hard part....Bono. Well I can't lie....sharebear helped me a bit with the eq curve for it and fixing the latency issues to get it lined up properly. Once that 2 weeks of my life paid off with a nice final mix ...I had to pan the vocal and get the final mix the way my ears liked it. Simple...right? Well...not so much but I learned a ton and am quite content with the final results. Thanks to my young mentor for teaching an old Dawg some new tricks. I am looking forward to the video. The samples of Chris's work look great! Cheers to the next project...sharebear knows which show I'm voting for. Audio #12 - Wireless Receivers > Multitrack Recorder & Church Audio CA-11s Mixed by Univonc Mix Notes: The audio is a combination of the wireless feeds of Adam, Bono, and Edge. Bono was compressed to a point to where the simblance was minimized. Adam's feed was edited with a notch filter and edited with isotope 7 neutron. Edge feed edited to raise low end and panned slightly for bono vocal emphasized. Matrix was edited with CD master setting of isotope 7. The levels of compression were adjusted based on ear. Post-production Notes by Sharebear: All files were time aligned and loudness matched, so should make for easier switching between audio streams. Concluding Statements: Don’t ask about getting audio feeds on their own. This is how they will be shared for the time being. If I or anyone else decides to share their audio, they will decide when and where. Part of getting to use the audio was contingent on the way it would be distributed. Just as an FYI, this is the first thing I have ever released in HD (besides YouTube uploads) and I kept it at 720p for sharing based on the input files. It’s in a MKV file with descriptive audio tracks and chapters for those that want it in HD, it contains all twelve tracks and it’s for the people that want the best quality. This is the “preferred” version. However, I made a 2 DL-DVD “set” for those that want to play it on their existing DVD / Home Theater equipment. We have spread out the tracks over the course of two discs because of the eight audio track limit to DVD specs. There are some repeats among the two discs, but you will want them both if you choose to do DVDs! It’s also shared on YouTube with the “Wet” Mix. There are no plans for any other type of release at this time. Please do not rip the audio and share, nor remaster/repackage the video in any form. This includes reuploading to YouTube with different audio tracks. Keep it in tact as I shared it, included sharing this text file. Thank you for reading the longest and most pretentious info file for a U2 Torrent. We can only hope the multicam lives up to the info file. Enjoy everybody!
